I was wrong in my last post when I thought the worst was over on Wednesday morning. Gideon’s fever spiked to 104.4 later that day and he couldn’t even stand on his own. The mystery fever finally broke for good yesterday afternoon, and while he had lost his appetite, he finally felt normal to the touch and slept through the night. Me, too, cause I wasn’t waking up every two hours to check on him.
Then I went in to his room this morning to give him his bottle, and I noticed little, flat red bumps on his face. I instantly thought, crap, the kid’s got chickenpox. But he wasn’t exhibiting any symptoms of chickenpox–the fever was gone, the bumps weren’t blistering and he wasn’t itching. In fact, except for the bumps across his face and stomach, he seemed totally, 100 percent normal.
So I did a little Googling. Turns out he doesn’t have chickenpox. Just a typical case of roseola. My mother got this about 20 years ago but aside from her case, I’ve never heard of anyone else getting this damn illness. But that don’t mean squat cause apparently it’s one of the most common toddler illnesses. Next to chickenpox.
You can see the little red bumps on his back in this picture. The stomach and face were first, then they spread to his back and groin but no limbs. He was doing just fine all day today. Ate all his food, ran around from room to room, bossed the dog and cat around, and played with his toys.
Roseola, shmoseola.
